JULY SUGAR (electronic version 2:30 am – 1:00 pm CDT)
(5/15): Sugar futures edged higher in thin trade. Thailand, the world's second-biggest sugar exporter, has ended its 2011/12 crushing season and produced a record 10.2 million tonnes of sugar, the Office of Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB) said on Tuesday, adding that might lead to record exports this year. White, or refined, sugar money managers, reduced their net-long positions by 42 percent to 2,624 futures and options, according to NYSE Liffe. That compares with a net-long position of 4,553 contracts a week earlier. White sugar declined 2.2 percent in the period, Bloomberg reported.

JULY SUGAR (electronic version 2:30 am – 1:00 pm CDT)
(5/14): Sugar futures edged higher on Monday on commercial buying. Market remains under severe pressure from the ongoing harvest of top producer Brazil's main center-south cane crop, Reuters reported. There is also the prospect that India will be exporting an additional 1.0 million tonnes of sugar in the weeks ahead, Reuters reported. Premiums for white, or refined, sugar are rising in India and Europe, possibly signaling increased demand for the sweetener before the Ramadan, according to Swiss Sugar Brokers. Muslim nations usually stock up on sugar before Ramadan, which starts in July this year.

JULY SUGAR (electronic version 2:30 am – 1:00 pm CDT)
(5/11): Raw sugar settled weaker Friday, finishing the week lower for the seventh straight time. The main bearish factor continues to be rising supplies from Brazil and India and India’s move to drop all sugar export quotas and permit requirements, thus allowing unfettered Indian sugar exports, CRB Research Team reported. The International Sugar Organization Friday upwardly revised its estimate of the world sugar surplus for 2011-12, to 6.48 million metric tons from the 5.17 million tons it projected in February.

Premiums for white, or refined, sugar are rising in India and Europe, possibly signaling increased demand for the sweetener before the Ramadan, according to Swiss Sugar Brokers.
The price of white sugar in India, the world’s second- biggest producer and largest consumer, is $25 a metric ton above the August futures on the NYSE Liffe exchange in London, the broker said in a report e-mailed dated May 12. The premium was $15 a ton on May 5, according to data from the broker.

JULY SUGAR (electronic version 2:30 am – 1:00 pm CDT)
FUNDAMENTALS: (5/10) Raw sugar futures moved modestly higher on buying by small speculators as the market consolidated after the severe beating it sustained the last few weeks brecorder.com reported. The market has tumbled nearly 25 percent since trading at 26 cents in late February due to the prospect of bumper supplies from top producer/exporter Brazil and the likelihood that No. 2 producer India will be a large exporter of the sweetener later in the year.

Sugar output in Brazil’s Center South, the world’s largest producing region, dropped 35 percent in the second half of April as mills delay the start of crushing after prices plummeted.
Output declined to 389,400 metric tons between April 16 and April 30, from 603,500 tons a year earlier, industry association Unica said in an e-mailed statement today. The current crop year started April 1.

JULY SUGAR (electronic version 2:30 am – 1:00 pm CDT)
(5/8): Raw sugar futures closed down more than 3 percent on Tuesday, sinking to close at the lowest level in just over 20 months after a wave of sell-stops extended losses in the market already pressured by the expectation for large supplies, Reuters reported. Sugar futures were pressured by plentiful supplies in the pipeline in addition to renewed talk that No. 2 producer India will export an additional 1 million tonnes.

JULY SUGAR (electronic version 2:30 am – 1:00 pm CDT)
(5/7): Sugar closed higher on spec buying. The London softs markets were closed Monday for the May Day holiday. Fundamentally, the sugar market is well supplied as the center-south cane harvest in Brazil gathers pace. More Indian exports are expected in the weeks ahead, Reuters reported.
